Icons and indexes are important in media texts as they are something that people are able to easy recognise. Global brands avoid symbols as might have a different meaning or interpretation in different countries or areas so therefore it might be good with customers from one area in the world but could be seen as offensive in another part of the world therefore causing those customers to be alienated and offended at the brand therefore harming the brands reputation and might cause negative brand association.

Image result for what are advertisement that were offensive

This advert tried using the icon of a baby to create the idea that they have young customers which makes people think that the business is successful. However, if someone wasn't aware of the 7-up t would create the idea that the advert is promoting under-age drinking which is a harmful and destructive action.

This advert uses the icon of a rock and a pillow to promote their product. Since people know that a rock is hard and tough and a pillow is soft and delicate therefore it doesn't alienate an audience and also gets the point of the advert across.
