Daily Mail case study

Daily Mail case study 1) The front page stories on the September 21st edition of the Daily Mail is a news story about Meghan Markle and the other one is Theresa May trying to get strike a deal which allows the UK to leave the EU. 2) Meghan Markle, EU deal. 3) The front cover has been split into two stories covering Meghan Markle and EU deal. The part that is focusing on Meghan Markle uses a Sans Seriff font and is coloured in purple which has connotations relating to royalty which links to Meghan Markle as she is royalty herself. It also has a picture of Meghan Markle and her mother both appearing to be happy and smiling which gives a positive image towards the both of them. It also shows how the Daily Mail wants the audience to think a certain way when it comes to reading the news story on Meghan Markle as they use positive images which makes the audience think a certain way when reading the news story. The second news story about the EU deal uses black and white and us

News Story 5 1)  https://inews.co.uk/nhs/plans-to-make-pharmacists-tackle-nhs-prescription-fraud-are-fraught-with-problems/ The title of the news story is " NHS plans to make pharmacists tackle NHS prescription fraud are fraught with problems." 2)  3) Pharmacists are going to be placed on the frontline of a government crackdown because of suspicion of prescription frauds. This would be considered hard news as it can be considered as an issue that can affect people on national or regional scale. 4) This story can appeal to an audience be Familiarity and Negativity. The audience can appeal to an audience as a British audience are going to be familiar with the NHS and if there are any issues facing the NHS, it can affect the person reading it too. Also, this can also appeal to an audience because of the negativity of the story. Not only does it focus on a scandal but also focuses on prescription fraud which is very controversial. 5) This story can be d

News Story 4 1)  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6274093/Turkish-officials-audio-recording-moment-missing-Saudi-journalist-murdered.html The title of the news story is  "Turkish Officials 'have FOUND audio recording of the moment journalist was murdered by Saudi assassination squad recorded on his Apple watch" 2)  3) Turkish Officials found out that there was a audio recording on an Apple Watch belonging to a journalist that was murdered by a Saudi assassination squad. I would say that this is hard news as it is political. It would also be hard news because of the fact it talks about a journalist being murdered by Saudi assassins. Lately, Saudi Arabia has been the focus of many news stories with this being one of the many new ones. 4) The news story would appeal to an audience because it uses Negativity and Elite nations and people. Saudi Arabia is a controversial country and has many incidents happening around it and because of this many

Regulation

Regulation 1) The amount of staff the Leicester Mercury had was 130 journalists. Perch see's the paper taking massive opportunities allowing them to create all sorts of different content which allow them to communicate with the audience. 2) He views the phone hacking scandal as something that should not have happened and he views the news regulatory system as problematic and should be dealt with in a legal way. He states that the a small number of the press behave in a total unacceptable way. He also states that regulation isn't useful as they don't look at regional press or a small weekly newspaper. 3) The IPSO stand for the Independent Press Standards Organisation and is a " independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK." Many of the things  that they do are: Make sure that member newspapers and magazines follow the Editor's Code Investigate complaints about material that may breach the Editor's Code Make news

The death of print media

The death of print media 1) 30 years ago, the newspaper industry was successful however 30 years later its starting to decline. 2) The Independent has started to fall prey to the decline in the newspaper industry allowing it to be used further evidence and proof that the print industry is indeed dying. 3) The Independent was famous for supposedly being  " free from political bias, free from proprietorial influence". 4) Evgeny Lebdev states that " the ceasing of a printed version was a bold transition to a digital-only future." 5) Online newspapers make money through adverts in their website. 6) Simon Kelner stated that "For me, the power of the Independent came from  the variety of voices, the originality in its design and the iconoclastic  feel of the paper. It is very difficult to replicate that in digital form. And  it is even more difficult to do that with a paper like the Independent." 7) Fake news can be used by newsp

The future of journalism

The future of journalism 1) Clay Shirk argues that "accountability journalism" is important as the media gets their information which they base their news story from journalist and if the journalist isn't correct or accountable then this makes the news story false and inaccurate.  2) I think he states that advertisers place their adverts on news websites showing how they have a symbiotic relationship as advertisers benefit from placing their news advert as they can get new customers from them viewing the advert and newspapers benefit as they make money from advertisers place their as on their websites. 3) I think Clay Shirk states that due to newspapers having so much content in terms of them consistently covering news stories, this causes the person reading the newspaper to go through many stories as they can thus unbundling as much content as they can. 4) If the internet was more widespread I992 then more people would have definitely known about it

News Story 3 1 ) https://www.dailymail.news.uk/news/article-6232587/Knifeman-goes-rampage-stabs-commuters-east-London-train.html Knifeman 'goes on the rampage' on London train and stabs one person putting Hackney Central station on lockdown. 2)   3) I would consider this news story hard news as hard news tends to talk about politics, war , economics and crime and this would be considered crime. Also, the website uses a factual approach in which they explain the events and what happened . This also talks about a serious topic which is a knife man going on rampage which causing three people to be hurt and because of this I would consider this hard news. 4) This might appeal to an audience as it uses Familiarity and Surprise. Familiarity is used as it the incident occurred in the Hackney which is in the UK causing the audience who are predominantly UK readers to be effected more as it is closer to them. Surprise is used as this incident is indeed a surprise whic

News story 2   1)  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-6230247/Thousands-passengers-left-stranded-budget-airline-Primera-Air-goes-bust.html  The title of the news story is "Thousands of passengers are left stranded after budget airline Primera Air goes bust." 2)  3) After the airline of Primera Air files for bankruptcy thus shutting down airlines and airplanes. This then causes thousands of passengers being left stranded without any of them being able to go home. Passengers or people left their start to take pictures and post them on Instagram. I would say this is an example of soft news as even though the news story talks about an issue that many people are facing however this centres on the lives of the individual and has little urgency when compared to other events that are currently going such as the Syrian crisis which would be considered hard news. 4) This story might appeal to an audience as it talks about everyday  peo

They've both been accused by British police of being two spies. They claim they are fearful for their lives and say that they were only in Salisbury because they wanted to visit Stone Henge. 4) This might appeal to an audience due to the increase of political issues which involve Russian. Also, people tend to have a negative view on the Russian government and if there is a story of two supposed assassins that entered the country that might intrigue people as one
